That would be news to millions of women who, um, give birth each year and consider it a joy and a blessing rather than a “real issue,” as the Vice President put it.
Can Harris simply not string words together or is she as inept at public speaking as her boss is? The truth is probably closer to the latter, she’s horrible in off-the-cuff situations when she comes across as condescending and irritated doused in a sense of being unprepared to answer practically any question that comes her way.
This one, though, in which Harris says “women are getting pregnant every day in America, and this is a real issue,” seems to follow no real logic or nuanced thought. It’s a word salad urging people to be mad at the reversal of Roe v. Wade because women can still get pregnant?
Harris can try to explain in her own words:
Democrats are still walking around acting like abortion is now banned in America. It’s not, of course, but listening to backbenchers like Harris try to explain that women get pregnant and now face a crisis at every turn you’d think being pregnant itself was banned.
There’s just no good way to continue turning up the heat on this issue without resorting to demagoguery at every opportunity. States ultimately are in control of their own abortion laws now and plenty of states will expand abortion basically up until right before birth like California, New York, and handfuls of others.
The hyperbolic sentiment from Harris notwithstanding, only the passively low information crowd or abortion zealots are taking even the most minor abortion infringements as akin to an outright national ban.
Since it looks like the border is all shored up and there are no other problems for the Biden administration to deal with, Kamala Harris will be venturing out on the Pregnancy Crisis Tour until the midterms hoping to gin up fear and controversy where it’s needed.
Expect visits and emphasis in tight districts and races where Democrats need to wring out some more votes by hyperventilating over abortion as the only issue — the only issue — facing American women today. Wait, women? What happened to “birthing person” as the correct term?
Harris did not clarify if it’s just women that the pregnancy crisis applies to or also the men who can apparently become pregnant also.
