In the interests of national unity, following President Biden’s lead, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Trump rallies remind her of rallies led by Adolph Hitler.
The comparison Hillary specifically cites is seeing a man speaking at a podium and rows of “young men” with their hands in the air. By that logic, most events featuring a speaker and an audience waving their hands could be easily misconstrued as a “Hitler” rally if that’s the extent of your historic knowledge, I suppose.
It’s a charming analysis brought to you courtesy of the woman who called half the country “a basket of deplorables” in an effort to connect with MidWest voters.
Here’s the transcript broken down so we can really pick it apart:
“I remember as a young student, you know, trying to figure out how did people get basically drawn in by Hitler. How did that happen?” Clinton said during an onstage interview at The Texas Tribune Festival, a “politics and policy event” in Austin, Texas.
“I’d watch newsreels and I’d see this guy standing up there ranting and raving, and people shouting and raising their arms. I thought, ‘What’s happened to these people?’” she continued.
“You saw the rally in Ohio the other night: Trump is there ranting and raving for more than an hour, and you have these rows of young men with their arms raised. I thought, ‘What is going on?’”
She added, “I think it is fair to say we’re in a struggle between democracy and autocracy.”
Did Hillary miss the entire presidency of Barack Obama? The entire four-year ordeal consisted of Professor Obama on stage riling up the crowd while the media labeled him the most moving speaker of all time. I don’t remember any WWII comparisons because people were being drawn into a political speech. There are many examples, but this one looks suspect:
Hillary is likely confused because she’s never given a speech where people were excited enough to stand, cheer, and raise their hands in solidarity with the message being presented on stage. Her speeches are generally tone-deaf and lack content beyond her own complaints about losing the 2016 election to Russian interference or something.
As one extremely astute Twitter user pointed out, the most recent invocation of authoritarian imagery seemed to come exclusively from one side and from one President:
Biden standing before a red-lit background, dressed in dark clothing, literally raising his fists while demonizing half the country seems rather autocratic and fascist just by aesthetics and content alone, doesn’t it? Anyone who watched Biden’s speech, set in front of a badly chosen optic of the illuminated Independence Hall in Philadelphia can attest it was a poor choice of setting and message.
Perhaps the bigger overriding question here is why Democrats continue pushing this “fascist” or “semi-fascist” message against millions of voters in the lead-up to the midterms. It’s partially a strategy to take the focus off Joe Biden to avoid a worse midterm rout. It’s also simply a ploy to continue dehumanizing Trump voters who may stand in the way of the Democratic Party agenda.
Hillary has never been one for self-awareness or overly deep thought.
