Biden Doubles Down on Abortion in Final Midterm Pitch

The “party of science” is going all-in on unfettered abortion for the final three weeks of the midterm election campaign.

President Biden is now promising to deliver (irony alert) a nationwide abortion rights law if Democrats win in November despite currently owning the majority in the House and Senate already. For some reason, Biden believes voters are stupid enough to believe that after the midterms, Democrats will suddenly have the muster to pass a federal abortion law even though they can’t pass one right now. It makes no sense and it’s probably the least useful message in an election where the top two issues–the economy and inflation–make up about 50% of voters’ top concerns.

Nonetheless, here’s Biden doubling down on abortion as the most important issue for his party:

President Joe Biden on Tuesday made a major promise on a push to put abortion rights into law as his party looks to seize on the politically divisive issue in the final push ahead of the midterm elections.

At an abortion-rights-focused speech at a Democratic National Committee event on Tuesday, Biden said that if Democrats elect more senators and keep control of the House in the midterms then he’d make abortion a top issue.

“The court got Roe right nearly 50 years ago and I believe the Congress should codify Roe, once and for all,” Biden said.

He then implored voters to elect more Democrats in order to make sure that bill could pass.

“If we do that, here’s the promise I make to you and the American people: The first bill I will send to the Congress will be to codify Roe v. Wade. And when Congress passes it, I’ll sign it in January, 50 years after Roe was first decided the law of the land,” Biden added.

Abortion doesn’t help inflation, the economy, interest rates, the price of gas, or practically any other day-to-day issue that voters must grapple with. It’s a single-issue topic for many voters and those voters are already voting for Democrats.

The abortion-centered pitch will not resonate with independent or moderate circles where the economy continues to reign as the top issue. What it will do, however, is cement the fact that Democrats have nothing else to offer and would prefer to avoid talking about the economy entirely.

Maybe this is why abortion is the only songbook Democrats have to play:

Remember, Biden’s abortion comments this week weren’t just an off-the-cuff thing, his team decided on an event complete with “Restore Roe” banners and a theme to lean hard into abortion rights. This comes despite all evidence that voters see the abortion issue, but they place it way down the list in terms of issues they care most about.

Earlier this week, we pointed to three charts that demonstrate how Democrats are vastly out of touch on the midterm issues voters care about. It’s entirely possible and likely plausible that Democrats have decided they lost on the economy and inflation already and there’s nothing left to say.

The only position to take is to double down on the issue that could help goose their own turnout of dispirited voters. In other words, Biden’s argument is more about making sure you vote to show your disgust about the Roe v. Wade decision even if you’re a dejected Democrat planning on sitting home.

It’s all abortion all the time and not much else from the Biden White House.
