Newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is making good on his promise to boot certain Democrats from key committee assignments.
Part of the removal is for practical reasons such as the case of Rep. Eric Swalwell, who was sleeping with a Chinese spy. Swalwell probably shouldn’t be on the Intelligence Committee moving forward since he’s already compromised himself and is generally regarded as a left-wing political hack.
Whatever the case, McCarthy is setting up assignments and Democrats now face a reckoning for their prior decisions of picking and choosing which Republicans they wanted to allow on committees when they had the majority:
McCarthy (R-Calif.) told the Associated Press that he would move to strip the trio of their assignments, following through on a vow of payback for Democrats ousting Reps. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from their panels during the last Congress.
Schiff and Swalwell, both from California, would be removed from the House Intelligence Committee while Minnesota’s Omar would be kicked off the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
McCarthy vowed almost exactly a year ago that he would remove the three Democrats if Republicans won back the House in the 2022 midterm elections, and repeated that promise last November after his prediction was realized.
“The Democrats have created a new thing where they’re picking and choosing who could be on committee,” McCarthy said last January. “Never in the history [of Congress] have you had the majority tell the minority who could be on committee, but this new standard, which these Democrats have voted for — if Eric Swalwell cannot get a security clearance in the private sector, there’s no reason why he should be given one to be on Intel or Homeland Security.”
Rep. Adam Schiff is a noted liar and a tool with regard to every ginned-up Trump scandal during the former President’s entire first term. It was Schiff running to the cameras every five seconds declaring that he had “evidence” of this wrongdoing and that wrongdoing, but it was all classified so he couldn’t share it. Turns out, Schiff had nothing and was constantly gaslighting the CNN audience and peddling lies and conspiracy theories that Democrats so desperately wanted to be true, like the Russia collusion hoax.
Schiff shouldn’t be anywhere near a position of leadership or decision-making, he’s a failed, compromised individual with zero integrity and zero honesty with regard to conducting an objective and fair investigation into anything.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a “squad” member who peddles conspiracies of her own and has spewed antisemitic garbage on social media, is another House member that shouldn’t have a committee assignment. Her behavior, while seemingly excused by her voters, but mostly condemned by her own party, shouldn’t be accepted by the House of Representatives. Omar, in her mind, equates the United States and Israel, both forces for good in the world, with actual terrorist groups like Hamas.
Aside from Democrats, McCarthy is also slapping down Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican. Crenshaw spent last week calling his House colleagues “enemies” and “terrorists” for demanding concessions before they could support McCarthy’s Speaker bid.
Imagine that, the House had to deliberate and compromise to reach a consensus but Crenshaw called the 20 Never-Kevin members “terrorists” for wanting better governance:
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, one of the House GOP’s most prominent figures, was denied the chairmanship of the chamber’s Homeland Security Committee Monday in favor of a member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus — days after Crenshaw called opponents of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy “terrorists.”
Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), will instead lead the panel that provides oversight over the Department of Homeland Security – and handles issues related to illegal immigration and terrorism.
Crenshaw raised the ire of his colleagues during the prolonged floor fight for speaker last week when he raged against a group of around 20 Freedom Caucus members who withheld their votes from McCarthy until they could extract concessions on the way the 118th Congress was run.
“They are enemies now,” Crenshaw told CNN of the holdouts following a heated closed-door GOP conference meeting Tuesday. “They have made it clear that they prefer a Democrat agenda than a Republican one.”
The same day, Crenshaw told Fox News Radio host Guy Benson of the rebels: “We cannot let the terrorists win.”
Crenshaw is being called the new John McCain of the GOP. He falls in line when he wants to and speaks out when he sees an opportunity to gain the limelight. In this case, he stepped too far over the line and created a backlash by referring to fellow Republicans as “terrorists” for doing their job.
So far, so good for McCarthy when it comes to some of his early promises. The honeymoon phase for the new Speaker is still intact.
