The 2024 Republican primary is basically in full swing.
While one of the major names hasn’t yet announced his candidacy, he’s sure acting like he’s about to launch a campaign. That candidate is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, of course, and he’s inching closer and closer to formally entering the political ring with former President Donald Trump.
Just days ago, in Manchester, DeSantis spoke at a GOP fundraising dinner where his speech was interrupted by protestors on stage:
Protesters rushed the stage as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) spoke during a GOP fundraising event in New Hampshire Friday, with the organization behind the protest calling him antisemitic as he gears up for an expected 2024 presidential campaign.
Two women shouted “Jews against DeSantis” from the stage as they were being quickly escorted out, while the governor disregarded their interruption.
“You’ve got to have a little spice in the speech,” he said.
DeSantis was headlining the Amos Tuck Dinner, a key fundraising event for the New Hampshire Republican Party.
The protestors gave DeSantis’ speech a bit more attention than it would have otherwise garnered.
In a move that seems not coincidental, Trump just announced a Manchester event to take place next week:
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to make his second trip to New Hampshire since becoming a 2024 presidential candidate next week, when he is scheduled to deliver remarks in downtown Manchester, his campaign announced Monday.
An email sent by the Donald J. Trump for President 2024 campaign announced the former president will deliver remarks at The Armory at the DoubleTree Manchester Downtown, 700 Elm St. in Manchester, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 27.
Doors to the venue will open at 1 p.m., with a program scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
The venue holds between 800 and 1,200 people, depending on the setup, according to the Doubletree Manchester Downtown website.
A couple of months back, in January, some polls were showing DeSantis edging out the former President in New Hampshire by double-digits in some cases. More recently, however, even before news of the Trump indictment in Manhattan, DeSantis has been losing ground:
Former President Donald Trump tops a new GOP primary poll in New Hampshire released Monday, with Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu the only two candidates to hit double digits in the early primary state.
Trump leads the new poll from the Saint Anselm College Survey Center at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics with 42% of those who the institute rates as “intending to vote in the Republican presidential primary” saying they’d most likely back him. Behind him is DeSantis at 29%, Sununu at 14%, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at 4% and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy at 3%.
