Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie held a Town Hall event in New Hampshire on Tuesday night outlining his anti-Trump presidential campaign platform.
The substance was thick on claims that Christie, and no one else, is uniquely qualified to take down Trump for some reason, and don’t you dare doubt him!
In case you missed it, which you probably did, here are a few clips to preview how Christie intends to tackle Trump over the next several months:
The Trump family is full of “grifters” according to Christie, and Trump promised to balance the budget but failed to meet his promises. Also, breaking news from Christie, Trump believes the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. By many accounts it was, but that’s another story.
What’s missing from Christie’s lines of attacks on Trump is, quite frankly, anything new. There’s nothing that Christie said that hasn’t been beaten to death on CNN panels every night in primetime for the past 8 or so years. Trump’s a grifter, he hates to lose, etc, etc.
From the perspective of Trump supporters, Christie is just another in the long line of turncoats.
Politico reported on the Christie event referring to the former president as “Teflon Trump”:
Teflon Trump will, at a minimum, have to contend with an earful from Christie, who’s positioning himself as the most unbridled verbal decapitator of the former president in the GOP primary.
That’s no small feat in a field where others are just beginning to get into direct confrontations with the 2024 polling leader — and some are still skirting them.
“I am going to be very clear — I’m going out there to take out Donald Trump. But here’s why: I want to win, and I don’t want him to win,” Christie said. “There is one lane to the Republican nomination and he’s in front of it. And if you want to win, you better go right through him because let me guarantee something from knowing him for 22 years. He’s going to try to go through Ron [DeSantis] and Nikki [Haley] and Tim [Scott] and anyone else who stands in his way.”
Christie said previously that he wouldn’t enter the presidential race to be a “paid assassin.”
Despite Christie claiming that he wasn’t entering the race to be a “paid assassin,” he sure sounds a lot like a paid assassin. One has to wonder if the checks from the DeSantis campaign have cleared his account yet. Just kidding, it’s a joke, people! Christie seems to be embarking on this revenge battle all on his own.
However, the clear beneficiary has to be DeSantis and the other Trump alternatives in the race. Let’s be clear, in no universe does Chris Christie become the 2024 Republican presidential nominee, and he knows it. There’s clearly an ulterior motive here and it likely stems from some bitterness after Christie endorsed Trump in 2016 and was never rewarded with a job in the new administration.
The other problem with Christie being stuck on attacking Trump is that it’s fairly boring to listen to. It may be news to some, and Trump-haters will cheer it on, but everyone is accustomed to Donald Trump being attacked by Democrats, Republicans, and the media alike. In fact, the worst attacks seem to come from Republicans, like Liz Cheney, for example, so Christie is nothing new here except he’s deciding to take the show on the road and ask for donations to keep it going.
It’s hard to win by positioning yourself as the negative vote against something. If Republican primary voters don’t like Trump, are they going to vote for Christie instead? Not a chance, so what’s the game plan here?
It’s a Christie kamikaze mission to bury Trump and help boost someone else. Get the popcorn.
