Trump is fresh of stops in Nevada and New Hampshire capping off a busy month of campaigning.
While a lot has been made over the past month of movement toward DeSantis in Iowa, nothing seems to be fermenting on the ground. Endorsements from Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and evangelical activist Bob Vander Plaats haven’t moved the needle. NBC News recently did an informal poll among the GOP chairmen of all 99 Iowa counties and found that of the ones who replied, the overwhelming belief is that Trump will win the Iowa caucuses running away:
Bryan Whipp tried — unsuccessfully — to find a larger site for next month’s GOP presidential caucus in Page County, Iowa. He thinks it’s going to be pretty crowded.
“I think [former President Donald] Trump’s going to bring a lot of people out,” said Whipp, who leads the Page County GOP in the southwestern corner of the state.
Whipp is one of 99 Republican Party county chairs in Iowa — local GOP leaders close to the ground and in tune with their party’s voters in the first caucus state. NBC News contacted all 99 to survey them on the state of the Republican race. Of the 50 county party leaders who weighed in on the likely winner, 43 picked Trump, while just a couple picked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the candidate they expect to win.
Most of the chairs surveyed have not endorsed a GOP candidate. Around half of the county chairs did not respond to requests for comment.
Conventional political wisdom has been thrown on its head since Trump rode down the golden escalator in June 2015. Visiting all 99 Iowa countries, as DeSantis has done, hasn’t done a thing to detach the MAGA base from Donald Trump. As the caucus date gets closer, Trump seems to be consolidating support in Iowa rather than losing it. Meanwhile, the other candidates keep “checking the boxes” when it comes to the things that political consultants tell them they need to do to remain competitive in Iowa.
The party chairmen contacted by NBC News are the closest to the ground when it comes to hearing from their local voters. They know where the support truly lies and it’s not with DeSantis or Haley, ultimately.
