According to varied reports, the Trump and Biden campaigns had already agreed to a Vice Presidential debate even before J.D. Vance was named as the former president’s running mate.
Now, it’s a question of agreeing on the logistics such as the host network, and picking a date. The Trump campaign has already agreed to a VP debate hosted by Fox News while the Biden campaign has agreed to let CBS News host the event.
Can the two campaigns agree to hold a debate sometime between the end of the RNC and the start of the DNC? Maybe:
The campaigns have not yet agreed on a debate host or date.
The Biden campaign accepted an invitation from CBS News for a vice presidential debate for either July 23 or Aug. 13.
The Trump campaign accepted an invitation for a vice presidential debate hosted by Fox News, on a “Date to be determined,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
Typically, there is only one vice presidential debate during a campaign season. However, the Commission on Presidential Debates officially stepped down from hosting all debates this year for the first time since 1988.
It’s unlikely there will be two vice presidential debates but it’s not out of the question. However, the idea that Kamala Harris will agree to a Fox News debate is laughable. Democrats simply cannot allow it to happen. Then again, it was CNN that let Biden walk himself into a trap of incompetence so maybe Fox would be a better venue.
The Biden campaign is touting Harris as “prepared” to debate Vance, according to Axios:
Vice President Kamala Harris is “prepared” to debate Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, who was named former President Trump’s running mate on Monday, a Biden campaign official said Monday on a press call.
Driving the news: “Vice President Harris is prepared to debate J.D Vance,” Biden campaign spokesperson TJ Ducklo said in the call with reporters after Trump named Vance as his running mate.
“We have accepted the proposal from CBS News … to participate in that debate, and we feel very good.”
“The VP will take it to J.D. Vance,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said on the Biden campaign press call.
A Harris-Vance debate will look a lot like Harris attacking Vance as a “MAGA extremist” while ignoring her own administration’s record. There’s nothing to defend about Biden’s inflation or foreign policy failures. The answer, as it has been for months now, is to attack anything Trump-related as being worse than Hitler.
Vance, undoubtedly, will be well-prepared to handle Harris and make the case that the Biden-Harris administration has crushed America’s middle class and driven inflation through the roof for households of all income levels. In other words, Vance will attack on substance, Harris will attack an empty boogeyman.
Once a date has been announced, you’ll find it listed on the debate schedule page.
