Despite a purplish trend in the state, North Carolina voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, albeit by a thinning margin. This year, the state will once again be heavily contested with millions of ad dollars pouring in from both sides:

Over the next few months, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are expected to spend millions on advertisements in seven key battleground states.

North Carolina is one of them. Political experts believe our state is especially important for these candidates.

“Even when we flip or swing from red to blue or blue to red, we’re right on that razor’s edge,” said Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University. “We’re incredibly close almost every year for really the last two decades.”

With history as a guide, if Kamala Harris cannot win nearby states like Georgia, it’s unlikely she’ll be able to flip North Carolina. Even with the inroads made by Biden in 2020, the Tarheel State still voted red for the second consecutive time.
