Results: Mexico Will Stop Migrant Caravans After Trump Tariff Threat

Well, that was fast.

Donald Trump hasn’t yet taken the Oath of Office as the 47th President of the United States and he’s already slowing the illegal immigration crisis.

President-elect Trump wrote the following on Truth Social just a day before Thanksgiving:

Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!

That sounds productive from the standpoint of encouraging Mexico to prevent rampant migration by impeding the process south of the border.

Almost immediately, however, it sounded as if President Sheinbaum tried to walk back whatever was said on the call, or at least that’s the way the media is interpreting it, according to Forbes:

The president-elect said he and Sheinbaum also discussed what more could be done to “stop the massive drug inflow into the United States,” something he had accused Mexico of enabling earlier this week while promising to slap 25% tariffs on all imports from the country.

Shortly after the call, Sheinbaum issued a statement on X saying she had an “excellent call” with Trump where she addressed Mexico’s strategy on the migration issue and informed him that “no caravans are arriving at the [U.S. southern] border because they are being attended to in Mexico.” [Emphasis added]

In a follow-up tweet after Trump’s posts, the Mexican president said she had explained to Trump her country’s “comprehensive strategy” for addressing the migration issue while “respecting human rights.”

That’s… basically what Trump said but the media is making it sound as if Mexico wasn’t agreeing to do more to halt northern migration than it’s already doing. Shenbaum said no caravans would be arriving at the U.S. southern border because Mexico would attend to them. That was the point of Trump’s tariff threat, which was to encourage more cooperation from our southern and northern neighbors.

As in, they can’t simply keep passing the buck expecting the United States to accept more and more illegal migrants. Canada and Mexico need to do their part and deal with their immigration issues.

Tariffs have never been a permanent part of Trump’s foreign policy; they are merely a bargaining chip. Trump is for open and fair trade which means fair on both sides. Mexico was cooperating on immigration before the Biden regime took over and opened the floodgates.

The Trump plan is fairly simple. Threaten tariffs and be willing to make good on that promise if needed. Mexico depends almost entirely on the United States for the vast majority of its exports:

This time around, Trump knows which buttons to push and levers to pull with various countries to spurn them into action.
