What’s going on in New York State? The left-wing bastion is suddenly looking like an ode to MAGA with two of the state’s top elected Democrats pledging cooperation with the impending Trump deportation plan.
New York, the state as a whole and the city in particular, has had ongoing problems managing Joe Biden’s immigration crisis. City shelters are swamped, services are being tapped, and in some cases, schools have been shut down to house illegal migrants. In the western part of the state, the City of Buffalo and Erie County have dealt with an influx of migrants bringing with them crime and other difficulties. Frankly, taxpaying citizens of all stripes are sick of the problem which is why Donald Trump made massive inroads with voters among even the deepest blue corners of the Empire State.
Just days ago, it was New York City Mayor Eric Adams daring people to “cancel him” over his support for deporting criminal aliens from his city, reports the New York Post:
Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that he’s open to deporting migrants from New York City who have been charged with crimes — a shift from his past stance of waiting for convictions before shipping off immigrant criminals.
Adams said he soon plans to meet with President-elect Donald Trump’s new “border czar” Tom Homan on the incoming administration’s plans to potentially deport accused migrant criminals.
“My position is people who commit crimes in our city, you have abdicated your right to be in our city and I am open to figure out the best way to address that,” he said.
The blurb doesn’t do it justice compared to hearing Adams in his own words explaining the problems in ways that even the most open-border Democrat might understand:
The left has fully lost Eric Adams. He's no longer afraid of them. "Well, cancel me because I'm going to protect the people of this city."

“Cancel me because I’m going to protect the people of this city.”
Well, it’s about time. The Biden-Harris administration turned both blind eyes to the border crisis and the problems that ensued. Officials like Adams were caught in the middle since they had to deal with the fallout in practical terms while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris sat at the top, having caused the problem, doing nothing to help.
Outside the five boroughs of New York City, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her support for Trump’s position on quick deportation of illegal migrants, reports Straight Arrow News:
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said she wants immigrants who have committed crimes to be deported. Hochul made the remark when she was asked if New York is a sanctuary state, a question she declined to answer directly.
“If someone breaks the law, I’ll be the first person to call up ICE and say ‘get them outta here’,” Hochul said during a news conference.
Hochul has been under pressure to strengthen protections for immigrants as President-elect Donald Trump continues making plans for his mass deportation operation.
What’s in the Albany water?
In all seriousness, Hochul and Adams are only making these statements now that it’s politically acceptable to do so. They both could have spoken up more forcefully before the election, but for obvious partisan reasons, they chose not to.
The other common thread is that both will be running for re-election and they need to start sounding like they’re tough on crime. There will surely be a limit to their participation and once the sob stories start of some migrant who lived in the state for a decade is getting deported, Hochul will be condemning Trump in the next breath.
Nonetheless, take the wins when they come and if a state as large as New York is willing to partner with the incoming Trump administration and make the country safer, then we should welcome it and strike while the iron’s hot.
The New York response is better than California where Gavin Newsom has vowed to “Trump-proof” the state and offered no cooperation on criminal deportations.
