Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann appeared on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer earlier today discussing her thoughts on President Obama’s foreign policy objectives. Bachmann firmly believes the policies set forth by the President have been a failure and she explained her positions to Schieffer.
Report from the Wall Street Journal:
The war in Iraq came at a high price: More than 4,400 U.S. troops lost their lives there, and Congress has allocated upwards of $800 billion to pay for the nearly decade-long military campaign.
Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.) thinks it’s time to present the Iraqis with a bill.
“I believe that Iraq should reimburse the United States fully for the amount of money that we have spent to liberate these people,” said Rep. Bachmann in an appearance Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “They are not a poor country, they are a wealthy country.”
In her comments Sunday, Rep. Bachmann expressed concern that U.S. withdrawal would leave the Iranians “waiting in the wings” to assert dominance in the region. But she also expressed outrage at the Iraqis’ apparent lack of gratitude toward the United States.
“We are there as the nation that liberated these people,” she said. “And that’s the thanks that the United States is getting? After 4,400 lives were expended and over $800 billion? And so on the way out, we are being kicked out of the country? I think this is absolutely outrageous.”
Bachmann has not been able to recover in the polls since Rick Perry entered the race. She has dropped off in Iowa which had been her strongest showing.
