Not just leads but leads by almost double digits over the second place Huckabee. It seems that Romney and others have fallen down a few pegs as Trump has grabbed the spotlight. This coming from Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democrat-leaning polling organization who is usually fair to both sides.
Report from PPP:
Trump’s broken the perpetual gridlock we’ve found at the top of the Republican field, getting 26% to 17% for Mike Huckabee, 15% for Romney, 11% for Newt Gingrich, 8% for Sarah Palin, 5% for Ron Paul, and 4% for Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty.
The only caveat in this that I can see is that Trump is the only Republican contender who has the media spotlight right now. There is a vacuum since the media is eagerly waiting for Republican candidates to poke and prod. Right now Trump is filling that vacuum because he has the name and media recognition to do it.
The meaningful polls, in my opinion, will be more likely seen in May/June after the first few series of debates happen. Still we might not have a fully declared field at that time but I’m betting more voters will begin paying attention which could certainly shift the polling data.
For now, Trump seems to be at the top of his self-created wave.
