As far as VP debates go, there couldn’t possibly be more riding on the performances tonight of Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris. For Pence the objective is clear, to dig the Trump campaign out of the Covid-19 hole it appears to be stuck in. For Harris, the debate presents an opportunity to illustrate her qualities before a national audience and make the case for Joe Biden.
The Debate Commission announced earlier this week that the candidates would be moved 12 feet apart and have plexiglass installed between them at the request of the Biden campaign. The changes to an already stringent health protocol were due to President Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis last week along with numerous other top White House aides.
Expected debate topics will include Covid-19, naturally, along with the Supreme Court, and health care. It’s also likely that foreign policy will be touched on as well. With President Trump announcing on Tuesday that he would cease negotiations with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over a new Covid-19 stimulus bill, look for the economy to be a major topic also.
