Denver is competing against a handful of other cities to make the cut in the next round of the Republican National Committee’s decision on where to host their 2016 convention.
Report from ABC 7 Denver:
Denver is waiting to find out whether it will make the next cut in the competition to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.
The Republican National Committee is expected to narrow the field of possible convention sites on Wednesday.
Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dallas, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Phoenix are also in the running.
Denver argues its success with the 2008 Democratic convention shows it can handle such a large event.
Convention sites are often held in geographic regions where the parties feel they need a big media presence to garner attention which translates to votes. Note the three Ohio cities still on the Republican list of potential host sites. The fact that the 2012 Democratic convention was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, was no accident.
What cities in 2016 would benefit the respective parties? The GOP may be focusing on states it has won in the recent past, like Colorado, with a hope of turning the tide in their favor. Democrats may be looking at swing states like Florida or maybe Ohio to help keep them in the blue column.
