Beyond Trump’s potential 2024 ambitions, several Trump-endorsed candidates will be speaking as the former president intends to put his mark on the 2022 midterm elections.
Arizona features a very heated Senate race where incumbent Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly is on the ballot in 2022 running for a full term after winning a special election to replace the late Sen. John McCain. Trump has yet to wade into a Senate primary endorsement among the Republican candidates, but the race is a backdrop for Saturday’s rally:
Former President Donald Trump is touching down in Arizona Saturday for his first rally of the midterm election year, bringing the spotlight to a state that will have hotly contested races for governor and the U.S. Senate in November.
In the governor’s race, Trump has endorsed Kari Lake, a former news anchor who says she wouldn’t have certified the 2020 election. He has not yet picked a Senate candidate to take on incumbent Democrat Mark Kelly.
The Republicans who are vying to challenge Kelly include Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, solar power executive Jim Lamon, venture capitalist Blake Masters and retired Air Force Major General Michael “Mick” McGuire.
Democrats have won the last two Senate races in Arizona, including the 2020 special election when Kelly defeated former Senator Martha McSally by 2.4 points. Kelly, a retired astronaut, is serving the remainder of the late Arizona Senator John McCain’s term and must run again this year for a full six-year term.
Polling of the 2024 Republican primary indicates that Trump remains the heavy favorite of GOP primary voters. At the moment, Trump leads Ron DeSantis, his biggest rival, by almost 38 points at 54% to 16.3% on average. Without Trump included, DeSantis is the preferred favorite. It’s safe to say that if primary voting started today, Trump would be the odds-on favorite if he decides to run.
There is clearly a large appetite for Trump within the GOP base and every reason for him to continue keeping his name fresh on the minds of Republican voters heading into the 2022 midterms.
The full video will be available here after the rally ends.
