Did you need a poll to tell you this? Of course, you didn’t, but we have one now anyway. According to some new numbers from Schoen Cooperman Research, the Biden administration and Congressional Democrats are viewed as caring way too much about left-wing policies like the Green New Deal, and not enough about issues like inflation and the economy.
When the standard answer to questions about has prices revolves around encouraging people to buy electric vehicles, it’s no wonder why Americans see their government as disconnected from the reality of everyday life.
Democrats, on their current course, are in for a shellacking if they can’t stop talking like jerks about issues voters care about:
In order to have a fighting chance in the midterms — as well as a shot at holding on to the presidency in 2024 — Democrats need to embark on a broader course correction back to the center. The party needs to show voters that they are focused on solving problems and addressing quality-of-life issues and that they reject the progressive left’s embrace of big government spending and identity politics.
Indeed, a majority of voters (54 percent) — including 56 percent of independents — explicitly say that they want Biden and Democrats to move closer to the center and embrace more moderate policies versus embracing more liberal policies (18 percent) or staying where they are politically (13 percent).
Most voters (61 percent) also agree that Biden and Democrats are “out of touch with hardworking Americans” and “have been so focused on catering to the far-left wing of the party that they’re ignoring Americans’ day to day concerns” such as “rising prices” and “combatting violent crime.”
The day-to-day issues that run people’s lives are uninteresting to the political class in Washington. Gas and groceries? Those are issues for people who drive themselves and prepare their own food.
The ruling class inside the beltway is unconcerned because their car and driver keep showing up no matter how high gas prices get. Plus, people complaining about gas should just buy a Tesla, or ride a bus, or take the subway, or get a bicycle, it’s really just that easy so stop complaining, you’re giving Jen Psaki a headache.
Thus, why Biden is still drowning on the economy since nothing he says or does seems to give voters confidence that he truly cares to fix the problem, or at least stop making it worse:
As inflation has risen, the economy has become a particular area of vulnerability for Democrats. Indeed, voters’ growing economic pessimism is one of the driving forces behind their dissatisfaction both with the current state of the country as well as with Biden.
Biden’s approval rating on handling the nation’s economic recovery is 21 points underwater (59 percent disapprove, 38 percent approve). This marks a notable 17-point decline from our December polling, when Biden’s approval rating on the recovery was negative 4 points, 50 percent to 46 percent.
There are plenty of Democrats breathing a sigh of relief that wall-to-wall cable news is nothing but the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That’s not to take anything away from the plight of the Ukrainian people and the evil aggression and war crimes of Vladimir Putin, but the media should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Instead, Biden’s off the hook according to mainstream media sources because everything is Russia’s fault now.
With the world order under great duress, Biden’s on shaky ground politically. The stakes are high and his policies since his inauguration have put America in a weaker position globally. To top it off, Democrats are very, very good at talking down to the American people and dismissing concerns about inflation as “high class problems.”
