While Virginia has shifted notably toward favoring Democrats over the past decade, recent polling has shown the state to be a potential toss-up in 2024, according to WDBJ:

President Joe Biden won Virginia by about 10 percentage points four years ago, but two recent surveys, including the Roanoke College poll in late May, showed President Biden and former President Donald Trump essentially tied in Virginia.

While the campaigns might not consider Virginia a top battleground state, there is a growing consensus the Commonwealth is in play.

Pollster Amanda Iovino with WPA Intelligence discussed the Commonwealth’s status during a Wednesday briefing for the group Virginia Free.

“If you look at the trend lines in Virginia, it is more competitive definitely than where it was in 2020, and more competitive I think than where we thought it was going to be as of maybe this time last year,” Iovino said.

WDBJ7 Political Analyst Bob Denton isn’t ready to declare Virginia a battleground state just yet. But…

“It’s significant that the Trump people really believe Virginia could be in play because the first visit after the debate is in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Denton said.

With the deep-blue suburbs of northern Virginia in the backward of the DC beltway, the Old Dominion has become more and more reliable for Democrats since the mid-2010s. However, recent inroads by Glenn Youngkin’s victory in 2021 to reverse course and win a trio of statewide races for Republicans proved the state could be in play for Trump this year.
