Slay doesn’t quite describe Pete Hegseth’s performance on Monday against a band of adversarial Democrats trying their best to derail his nomination as Donald Trump’s new Secretary of Defense. It was more like total annihilation.
Hegseth has his faults, to be sure, but he is a solid choice for Sec Def, which he demonstrated during the start of his confirmation hearing this week. Democrats, as expected, went off the rails with their questioning and in many ways reinforced much of what Hegseth preaches about military readiness and standards.
The summation of why Hegseth must be confirmed comes from his own mouth when he talked about the total lack of accountability within the Pentagon:
HEGSETH: "If you're a rifleman and you lose your rifle, they're throwing the book at you. But if you're a general who loses a war, you get a promotion."

When it came to Hegseth’s view that women can serve in combat roles but standards shouldn’t be lowered to make that happen, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand lost her marbles and went nuts on a desk-slamming rant:

Checkmate, Hegseth.
The very point he has made repeatedly, and anyone of sound mind agrees, is that military readiness requires a standard upheld by all combat troops, regardless of gender. Standards shouldn’t be lowered to accommodate various groups of soldiers for whatever reason. It’s a simple concept but one that is foreign to anyone infected with the woke mind virus as Gillibrand is. You’re simply not allowed to suggest that some people will not make the cut. That includes men and women who cannot meet the standard for military combat roles.
Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, who looks like a Batman villain, tried to attack Hegseth on character issues and wound up losing the battle:
Sen. Tim Kaine needs to be censured for trying to use Hegseth’s own 7-year-old daughter to attack him.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Pocahontas fame was laughed at after Hegseth pointed out the flaw in her line of questioning:
The whole room just started laughing at Pocahontas after Hegseth embarrassed her.
"You're quite sure that every general who serves should not go directly into the defense industry for 10 years, but you're not willing to make that same pledge?"

Senator Angus King of Maine tried to attack Hegseth over torture and waterboarding and it did not end well:

Then there was Sen. Markwayne Mullin who put on a clinic for how Republicans should fight against the absurd and hypocritical questioning from Democrats on the rest of Trump’s nominees:

Hegseth acted professionally, answered every reasonable question asked of him, and earned the right to serve President Trump in the Department of Defense. If this is the best Democrats have in terms of fighting Trump’s remaining nominees, they’re not gonna make a dent.
Here’s Megyn Kelly’s take on the Hegseth hearings after observing in person. Kelly was invited to appear as a show of support for Hegseth and she obliged. Kelly’s verdict? Pete’s on his way to confirmation after a day one masterclass:
